Turn in the road

Select first gear, get the bite, all round observations and move very slowly, using both clutch and brake to control the speed

Get full lock to the right straight away, maintaining full observation

When left door mirror is three quarters across the road, turn the steering wheel one turn to the left and stop, hand brake, select reverse gear and all round observation

You must get the bite before moving off (remember the camber on the road)

Looking over your left shoulder and controlling the speed with both clutch and brake continue turning full lock to the left until the right door mirror is on the centre line of the road, at this point one full turn to the right

Stop, hand brake, select first gear, get the bite, all round observations, turning to the right and maintaining a slow, controlled speed

ALL THE TIME YOU ARE DOING THIS MANOEUVRE YOU MUST KEEP OBSERVING

THE CAR MUST BE UNDER CONTROL AND VERY SLOW

Left-hand reverse

Stop the car on the far side of the junction about 10 metres past and a gutter width away from kerb

Hand brake, reverse gear and all round observations

You must look over your left shoulder while travelling backwards, keeping the centre of the window on the kerb (base of window wiper)

Continue observing, if a vehicle or any road user appears stop and wait, also never drive towards pedestrians

Stop when you reach the point of turn (this will be discussed on your lesson) hand brake and all round observation. If safe continue with either a full turn or three quarters of the steering wheel (this will depend on the shape of the corner)

You now have to observe down the road you are entering. If a vehicle is driving towards you put the car in first gear and return to the starting point. Never force a vehicle to negotiate a junction in a dangerous manner

Move backwards under clutch control and continue observations

When the pavement first appears in your back window take a quarter turn off

Continue reversing slowly until the centre of the window appears on the kerb

Now travel down the road until you have cleared the junction before stopping

ALL THE TIME YOU ARE DOING THIS MANOEUVRE YOU MUST KEEP OBSERVING

THE CAR MUST BE UNDER CONTROL AND VERY SLOW

Parallel Parking

Stop - parallel and a door width away (one metre) also halfway passed the parked vehicle

Hand brake on, select reverse gear and all round observations

Reverse until centre pillar is level with parked car’s centre pillar

Stop - hand brake on and all round observations

Move slowly backwards under clutch control turning the wheel one full turn to the left

This will bring the car round and at 2 o’clock one turn to the right (the wheels are now straight)

Travel back in a straight line until the left door mirror is halfway across the number plate of the parked vehicle

Another full turn of the wheel to the right and still moving very slowly you will see the car coming alongside the kerb

Finally when car is parallel to the kerb one full turn to the left to straighten the wheels

ALL THE TIME YOU ARE DOING THIS MANOEUVRE YOU MUST KEEP OBSERVING

THE CAR MUST BE UNDER CONTROL AND VERY SLOW

USE QUICK HANDS WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL

BE AWARE OF THE CAMBER ON THE ROAD. THIS MAY CAUSE THE CAR TO INCREASE SPEED

Finish up PARALLEL TO THE KERB and within 2 feet, no more than two car lengths from the vehicle in front.
